One year ago, I left my full-time job to go freelance, a move that both excited and terrified me at the same time. Fortunately, it’s been mostly great so far, except for one thing: My “me” time has basically gone out the window. Now that I have my own clients, I feel as though I need to be there for them 24/7. Combine that with the go-go-go energy of New York City life, and the fact that I've always been a perfectionist, and it’s easy to understand how I often end up thinking about everyone but myself.
But I've recently come to realize that in order to best serve my clients—and be there for my family and friends too!—I need to put myself first. And that means focusing on self-care in a bigger way than ever before. My new plan is to make sure I prioritize my workouts, my healthy diet, my daily meditation practice, and, perhaps most importantly, my yoga practice. I make sure to get to yoga class at least once a week, in addition to practicing at home.
Yoga, I've found, is my ultimate "me" time. I love the flow of it, how it gets me out of my head and into my body. I know that a lot of yogis say that, but that's because it's true: You simply can't be thinking about work or if your date from last night is going to text you when you're doing arm balances. And you also can't expect to be perfect. (I've certainly had my fair share of laughs after falling over in dancer pose!)
After savasana and a cleansing shower, after which I moisturize from head to toe, I love to extend my zen by grabbing a green smoothie (with some almond butter or plant-based protein powder to keep me full) and heading to a park. I'm a small-town girl at heart, and I need green space to rejuvenate. That epic combo—yoga + shower + green smoothie + green space—is often the highlight of my week. And the best part? Taking that time for myself makes the rest of my week even better.
Here's what I carry with me to maximize my "me" time.
